Our family enjoys studying history, especially the epic wars that changed the course of human history for the glory of God.  The Civil War was a bloody stain on our nation, but it did keep the North and South together, and our country is better for it.  We remember the sacrifices of the dedicated dads and sons who fought battles on both sides as we attend the annual Civil War Ball in our neck of the woods.  While dancing the night away to reels and grand marches, we laugh and mis-step as we practice the ettiquette and manners of the era.  Our girls have sewn a number of ballgowns and enjoy wearing them.   My 22 y.o. son also sewed an officer’s uniform a few years back – he is a creative genius who loves to work with his hands.  Anyway, my dear husband took all the 13 yo and up kids to the Ball tonight.  It is only by the sheer grace of God and the fact that my dh is a dedicated dad, that the van headed down the road just a few hours ago.

After enduring my debilitating backache earlier in the week, I came down with a double ear infection a few days ago.  This illness has kept me in bed, and has made twice the work for my already too busy husband.  But, he cheerfully has muddled through the last few days, in order to get to the Ball tonight.  It is a two hour drive from our farm to the ball.  Saturday is ‘day off’ for my kids from farm chores.  So, at 5am this morning, my husband left the warmth and comfort of bed, to feed livestock for 2 hours in sub-freezing temperatures.  Then, he drove 2 hours to the pre-ball practice so my 13 yo and 15 yo could attend the dance lesson as this was their first ball.  After he dropped them off with an older daughter to supervise, he drove another hour to pick up 25 turkeys and 66 chickens that we had processed.  He drove an hour home, unloaded the birds into freezers, then worked on the family van to get it roadworthy for tonight.  He then fed the livestock their evening meal, milked the cow, took a shower, got dressed in his Civil War Ball best, then headed out for another 2 hour drive.  Exhausting!  Crazy!  Over the top!

His days aren’t all like that, but he would endure the battle every day if he had to.  He is the reason I can be mom to so many, and we can ejnoy the life we do.  Thanks honey, for being a dedicated Dad.  Our family is blessed by your unending work, unfailing forgiveness, and unconditional love.  It is a wild ride, but I’m holding on tight to you!  Thank the good Lord He put us together all those years ago.  The world needs more dedicated dads like you, so more kids can be as blessed as ours.  Thanks for raising other people’s kids, and calling them your own.  Enjoy the dance!  (BTW: Dedicated Dad is the guy in the middle with the black hat!)
